Botahtaung Pagoda is located on Paya Botahtaung Road. This road is named after the pagoda. The pagoda is next to the city center on the banks of the Yangon River. There is a fresh air and peace atmosphere surrounding this pagoda due to its location near the famous river of Burma. This article will include some most useful Yangon travel tips for pilgrims when travel to this city and attend the famous festival in Botahtaung Pagoda.
Botataung Pagoda was named when military leaders along with thousands of Indian escorts from India arrived here over two thousand years ago. “Bo” means “leader” and “tahtaung” means “one thousand”. The pagoda, recorded in many Myanmar travel blogs, was built almost at the same time as the Sule and Shwedagon Pagoda. Over 2,500 years ago, the name of the pagoda used to be Kyaik-de-att or Sandaw Shin because it was thought to keep the holy hair of the Buddha.
Within the pagoda campus, there are many small towers surrounding the central stupa. The most remarkable Myanmar highlight of this tower is it is the place which stores the hairpieces relic of the Buddha, which are extremely sacred. Inside, the Bronze Palace Buddha image was cast in 1859 under the order of King Mindon.
