Yangon Airways, a Burmese domestic private airline, will extend its coverage of cities to Kengtung, Dawei, Myeik, Kawthoung, Thandwe and Sittwe in the near future, according to local media.
Currently, the airline, operating with two ATR-72 aircraft, covers routes to Yangon- Nyaung Oo-Mandalay-Heho-Yangon and Yangon-Tachileik-Yangon, an article in The Voice said on Sunday.
The airline said it planned to extend its coverage to regional countries next year to cover destinations of Bangkok, Cambodia and Malaysia, using a new ATR-72 aircraft, said the Voice.
The airline resumed service in October 2011 after suspension for nearly one year for absence of an Aircraft Operator Certificate.
Yangon Airways was first formed as a joint venture between state-run Myanmar Airways and the Krong Sombat Co Ltd of Thailand in October 1995. It was later turned into a privately owned airline.
Currently, there are six domestic airlines in Burma, including one state-owned company, Myanmar Airways. Privately owned airlines include Air Mandalay, Yangon Airways, Air Bagan, Asian Wings and Air Kanbawza.
Burma has 13 foreign airlines flying into the country including Air China, China Southern Airline, China Eastern Airlines, Thai Airways International, Indian Airlines, Air Asia Barhad’s, China Airlines, Silk Air, Malaysian Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Jetstar Asia, Thai Air Asia and Vietnam Airlines.
In June, Mizzima reported that the government has reinstated on-arrival visas for businessmen, tourists and transients at Yangon International Airport.
And on-arrival visa is divided into three categories: a business visa for US$ 50 for 70 days; a tourist visa for $40 for 28 days, and a transit visa for $20 lasts for 24 hours.
The new visa program will apply to citizens of ASEAN-member countries and China, Indian, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Britain and America; it will be extended at a later date, officials said.
