Coming to visit any country in the world, one of the activities that make tourists curious the most is exploring the special features in the traditional culture of the native land. In this article, let’s continue our trip with an adventure Myanmar to one of the most unique and ancient custom which has been maintained and preserved until now. The custom is shown clearly in a village with long-neck women.
Located on the top of Karen Hills, the tribe of long-neck women attracts tourists by the special custom of carrying many metal necklaces on their necks. The weight of their necklaces can be up to 16 kilograms. The tribe is called Kayan, and they live in the remoted Karen Hills in the Eastern of Myanmar. Women in this Myanmar tourist site have a custom to wear metal rings and necklaces on their wrists, ankles and necks with the perspective that the more they wear, the more they show their family richness and high status. Nowadays, women in this area are no longer interested in wearing such rings and necklaces for beauty. However, some of them still keep the custom for the purpose of service trading.
This custom now gradually disappears as this community opens to outer tourists, which leads to the suffering from Western culture. Girls and women, in general, in this village feel that their necks are no longer beautiful to them, so they give up this tradition although it is one of Myanmar top attractions. The modern culture has shown its strong influence in the traditional habit and custom of the local inhabitants.
Visiting this village, you can see goods stalls along the road which sell tremendous products, mostly silver and copper rings, necklaces and other jewelries on general. Besides, there are also brocade and colorful scarves or handkerchiefs which are made by hand, or postcards with the picture of the tribal girls with their bright smile. The long-neck girls are weaving behind their looms. They are all most beautiful girls who are chosen from hundreds girls in the village. In such adventure Myanmar, tourists will look at the pictures and wonder how the girls can look down on such weird long necks and do other work because the action is very difficult.
