Since the release of democracy campaigner Aung San Suu Kyi in 2010, after almost 20 years in detention, this south-east Asian country appears to be opening up more. The world has not only been inspired by National League for Democracy Party leader Suu Kyi’s courageous story but also curiosity about a country that has languished under years of military rule.December 30 sees the release of Luc Besson’s film
The Lady, which stars Michelle Yeoh as Suu Kyi in a biopic of the politician’s chequered life, likely to ignite further interest. Cox & Kings Travel Ltd relaunched trips to Myanmar in October 2010, and ‘The Golden Land of Burma’ itinerary is now the best-selling group tour in their Far East brochure. Far East product manager Yaow Butwisate-Lok says: ‘The country is rich in history and culture yet relatively untouched by tourism. Now is definitely the time to visit, while you can still see the exquisite temples and other sites with very few others around.’
The Post Office is putting its money on Thailand as being a winner for 2012 in the long haul market, maintaining its reputation for good value.Despite hard times of late, from rioting to devastating floods, according to its Holiday Costs Barometer, Thailand is the third cheapest long haul destination apart from Sri Lanka and Mexico.
