2. Kyauk Htat Gyi Pagoda, Yangon

Not really a pagoda in the traditional sense, the Kyauk Htat Gyi is actually a tazaung (pavilion) housing a colossal reclining Buddha. Although the 70-metre long sculpture is bigger than the reclining Buddha of Bago (see below), it is not as well known or as highly venerated. Nevertheless, it is a truly impressive sight. At the foot of the standing giant sprawls an equally huge reclining Buddha, measuring 95 metres from head to toe. Tens of thousands of smaller Buddha statues rest in neat rows under Bodhi trees radiating from the 131-metre Aung Setykar Pagoda, on flat ground at the bottom of the complex.

7. Pho Win Taung Caves, Monywa (Mandalay)

To the west of Monywa, the Pho Win Taung cave complex consists of a cluster of 492 prayer chambers hewn from three sandstone outcrops. Most were excavated between the 14th and 18th centuries, but with their peeling plaster murals and time-worn Buddha images they feel much older, like an apparition from the Central Asian silk route.

If you are making the trip here, you will need a decent torch to admire the caves’ decorated interiors. Some were elaborately painted in geometric designs rendered in earthy reds, browns and blues. Others lead to colonnaded walkways lined with meditating or reclining Buddhas. The fact that the site lies well off-the-beaten-track adds to its allure as one of the best Buddhist sites in Myanmar. 8. Shwezigon Pagoda, Bagan

I/ Burmese feudal period (before 1886)

According to Myanmar history, feudalism in Burma was formed very early. Burmese historical and archaeological records show that: The ethnic groups that migrate to Burma from different parts of the country established a brilliant feudal dynasty. This has played an important role in the country’s founding process. They are Mon, Burmese, Pyu, Shan, and Rakhine.

Around the 3rd century BCE, the Mon from the lands near Thailand and Cambodia today entered Burma, emigrate to the Ayeyarwady delta, creat the kingdom of Thanlwin and Sittang. They plant and sell rice, teak, perennial, ivory to India, China, Middle East and Indochina. They were the first people who contact with Buddhism.

In the 1st century BC in Myanmar history, some Tibetan-Burmese tribes, including the Pyu and their allied tribes, left their homeland on the south-eastern slopes of the Tibetan plateau to emigrate to the south, enter the valley. The upstream Ayeyarwady founded feudal states in central Burma such as Beikthano, Hanlin, Sri Ksetra (Thayekhittaya). Pyu dynasties flourished for about 400 years. However, in the following centuries, these countries disappeared.

In the 8th-9th centuries, the Burmese from the eastern Himalayas came to replace the Pyu in central Burma and established their own kingdom. Initially, they chose Tagaung north of Mandalay as a residence, before moving to Bagan in 849.

In the twelfth century, the Shan, or Tai, from Yunnan-China advanced into Burma and established their own nation in northeastern Burma.

It can be said, the countries of the above ethnic groups are the first feudal dynasty of Burma. The following centuries were the time to witness the decline and development of the Burmese feudal dynasty. History records the feudal period of Burma marked by three powerful feudal empires.

1. The First Burmese Empire – Bagan Dynasty (1044-1287)

In 849, after the Pyu were pushed out of the North by the Mon people, the Burmese set up their own settlements and took Bagan as their own settlement and place of residence. Over the next two centuries, dynasties were constantly waging warfare to win the war. In 1044, a royal military leader of the Burmese lineage, Anawrahta, who killed King Sokkat, became king of Bagan, opening up the mottled period of Myanmar history. The reign of King Anawrahta was considered the first Burmese empire – as a unified nation in politics, small kingdoms were subjected to the Burmese rule.

Bagan – the ancient capital of Myanmar

The Bagan dynasty left in the history of Burma many masterpieces of pagoda architecture and large irrigation works such as Meiktila reservoir, Kyokxe irrigation system. For more than two centuries the existence of the Bagan dynasty, the Burmese economy, especially agriculture, has grown strongly.

In 1077, King Anawrahta died, the dynasty went into decline. Successive kings such as Kyaanzitha, Alaungsithu, and Hililomoin not only failed to realize the great ideas of King Anawrahta but also fought for power, and internal divisions. All made the Bagan empire weaker.

2. The Second Burmese Empire – Toungoo Dynasty (1551-1752)

After more than three centuries of Myanmar history, the Toungoo dynasty was divided into small states. In the 16th century, the Toungoo dynasty carried out many wars of territorial expansion and unification. In 1541, the Burmese, under the leadership of King Tabinshwehti – the talented young king – took advantage of the constant battle between the Shan and the Mon, who attacked Inwa – the capital of the Shan. Subsequently, conducting successful conquests in the south, capturing the Mon king and transferring the capital to Bago.

The largest empire in Southeast Asia was formed. Bayinnaung declared himself “king of kings”. Burma entered the second glorious period. Other countries in Burma-China and Manipur (present-day India), are subject to tribute to the King of Burma.

Myanmar history records from the sixteenth century to the seventeenth century is the brilliant development of the second Burmese empire, the peak of which is the reign of King Bayinnaung, economic prosperity, busy trading exchanges, Buddhism was revived, the territory was expanded.

However, like the Anwrahta Dynasty, the Second Burmese Empire also entered a period of decline after King Bayinnaung died in 1581. Burma’s second feudal empire gradually disintegrated.

3. The Third Burmese Empire – Konbaung Dynasty (1752-1885)

In 1752, on the occasion of the Tangoo imperial court, weakened, with the French support, the Mon had captured the capital Inwa and tried to control Burma. However, the Burmese do not easily give up power. Aung Giaeya – a talented Martial artist expelled Mon. A year later, in 1753, he regained Inwa and proclaimed the king, took the name of Alaungpaya – meaning “future Buddha”, place the royal palace in Shwebo. The imperial city is called Konbaung. Konbaung is also the name of the dynasty.

In Myanmar history, during the reign of King Hsinbyushin and King Bodawpaya, the Qing Dynasty of China under the Qianlong Dynasty had four invasions of Burma and were smashed by the Burmese. This is considered one of the most glorious pages of the Burmese people.

On March 31, 1853, the Burmese court negotiated with Lambert. The two sides agreed to cease hostilities on June 30, 1853. Myanmar history says that the second war ended itself. The inferiority of the Burmese court led to Burma and the people of Burma paying dearly for the unequal treaties of 1862 and 1867, in which the British not only enjoyed many preferential trade privileges but also entitled “inviolable” in the territory of Burma.

3. The third English-Burmese War (1885)

After having cut the land for the British twice, the Burmese feudal court at that time was empty, no longer strong enough and prestigious to serve the people, standing up to expel the British colonialists. In 1886, the British colonialists merged Burma into a British Indian state (the Burmese called it “colonial colony”.) Burmese feudalism ended, Burma entered a new stage – the struggle against the British colonialists for independence.

III/ The struggle for independence (1886 -1941)

After gaining full control of Burma, the British not only enforced harsh policies, buried Burma’s natural resources, but also enforced ethnic separatism, leaving many long-term consequences for Burma. 1. MANDALAY CAPITAL

Built in 1880 by King Thibaw Min, son of King Mindon Min, it is very well-known thanks to its teak carvings of Buddhist myths on the walls and roofs. It is a typical construction of traditional Burmese architectural style.

* Sandamuni Pagoda
Situated southwest of Mandalay Hill, this pagoda was erected by King Mindon in 1874, with aim to be memorial to Mindon’s younger brother, Kanaung Mintha, who was assassinated along with other three princes, Malun, Sagu Minthu, and Maingpyin during the 1866 Myingun Prince rebellion. It covers the graves of these four murdered Princes and an iron image cast in 1802.

2. AMARAPURA CAPITAL

Amarapura was founded by King Bodawpaya of Konbaung Dynasty in 1783 as his new capital and also a center of Buddhist reforms and learning. It was the capital of burma twice during Konbaung period (1783–1821 and 1842–1859) before finally being supplanted by Mandalay in 1859.

Due to the royal treasury depleted by the Second Anglo-Burmese War in 1852, Mindon decided to reuse as numerous materials from Amarapura as possible in the construction of Mandalay. Its palace buildings were disassembled and caried by elephants to the new location, and the city walls were pulled down for use as building materials for roads and railways.
Until now, part of the moat is still recognizable near the Bagaya Monastery.

* U Bein bridge: It spans over Taungthaman lake and is just the world’s oldest and longest teak wood bridge.
When the capital shifted to Mandalay, the residents in Amarapura made use of teak wood from the imperial palace to erect this bridge. It is 1.2km long and consists of 1086 main pillars and thousands of boards. It was curved in the middle to resist assaults of wind and water.

3. INWA CAPITAL

It is an ancient imperial capital of successive Burmese kingdoms for almost 360 year, on five separate periods, from 1365 to 1842.
Inwa became the capital of Ava Kingdom, the main polity of Upper myanmar from the 14th to 16th centuries. After undergoing repeated attacks and sieges in the ultimate time of Ava Dynasty, it was chosen as a royal capital again on four periods of Toungoo and Konbaung Dynasties (16th to 19th centuries).
Throughout history, it was sacked and rebuilt numerous times. The capital was finally abandoned after it was completely destroyed by a series of significant earthquakes in March 1839, and King Tharrawaddy decided to rebuild a new palace in Amarapura in 1842. However, few traces of its former grandeur remain until now.

* Bagaya Monastery: This teak wood monastery was original built in 1593. After burnt in the fire in the reign of King Bagyidaw, it was reconstructed in 1992. It’s known as “Monastic college” where the royals were educated.

4. SAGAING CAPITAL

With many Buddhist monasteries, Sagaing is a meaningful religious and monastic center of myanmar. See again the past, it used to be the imperial capital of Sagaing Kingdom (1315–1364), one of the minor kingdoms that rose up after the fall of Pagan Dynasty.
During the Ava period (1364–1555), this city was the common fief of the crown prince and senior princes. It also had a brief time to be the royal capital between 1760 and 1763 under the reign of King Naungdawgyi (Konbaung Dynasty).

This pagoda comprises of 45 beautiful gilded Buddha images in a crescent-shaped colonnade, partly built on the side of Sagaing Hill. Each Buddha statue is unique in different sizes and facial expression.

It is based on Nga-pha Hill, one of the southern hilltops of Sagaing Hill. According to a legend, it was built overnight in early 1300s.
This pagoda features a central 97ft-high gilded stupa, some delightful paintings and statues, and good views over the scenery below. It is originally decorated with glass tiles for an unusual shimmering effect.

5. SHWEBO CAPITAL

The city was the origin of the Konbaung Dynasty, established by King Alaungpaya in 1752, which was the i political force in myanmar after the mid-18th century. It served as Alaungpaya’s capital from 1752 to 1760.
Up to 1752, Shwebo was a village, called Moksobo. In 1752, the chief of the village – Aung Zeya – founded the Konbaung Dynasty to resist the upcoming invasion of Lower myanmar and renamed his village as Shwebo. Over the following eight years, Alaungpaya led the reunification of myanmar with Shwebo as his capital. Shwebo lost its capital status after Alaungpaya’s death in 1760. The successor Naungdawgyi moved the capital to Sagaing closer to Irrawaddy river. The region then was usually held as an appanage by the most senior princes.

* From 1790, King Bodawpaya (6th king of the Konbaung Dynasty) ordered to construct a gigantic pagoda, a gigantic bell and a gigantic couple of lions during his reign until he was died in 1819.

* Mingun Pahtodawgyi (or Mantalagyi – fantastic Royal Stupa)

This incomplete monument stupa is a massive construction project started from 1790. However, when the king was died, it was purposefully left unfinished and halted. Mantalagyi had attained a height of 50 meters, one third of the intended height. A huge earthquake in 1839 caused huge cracks on it.

* Mingun bell:

It was cast to go with Mantalagyi in 1808. Until now, Mingun bell has been in splendid ringing condition with no cracks. It does not make clangs but is rung by salient the outer edge. In history, it had been the world’s heaviest functioning bell at several times. The primary weight of the bell is 55,555 viss. This number is conveniently remembered by many Burmese citizen as a mnemonic, and carved on the surface of the bell.

* Kaunghmudaw Pagoda (in Monywa)

This pagoda was constructed from 1636 to 1648 during the reign of King Thalun (8th king of Toungoo dynasty), very well-known for its uncommon egg-shaped design, which stands out more the traditional pyramid-shaped style of Burmese pagodas. The yellow domed house is 46m tall, featuring a big white marble Buddha image in its core and a relic chamber. Over 800 stone pillars along with image-filled niches circle it.

* Hsinbyume Pagoda

It was constructed in 1816 by King Bagyidaw (7th king of the Konbaung Dynasty) in north of Mingun to commemorate his primary consort and also cousin, Princess Hsinbyume, who was died in childbirth in a site closeby. This pagoda was painted in white and modeled the physical description of the Buddhist legendary mountain, Mount Meru. Seven concentric terraces symbolizes for the seven mountain ranges going up to the Mount.
