In 1874, King Bodaypaya of Amarapura sent his crown prince to conquer Rakhin with a force of 30000 men. The crown prince was successful and brought back to Mandalay the sacred Mahamuni Buddha. At that time, the statue was transferred into 3 pieces. King Bodayapaya was pleased to built a seven storey building to worship the sacred Buddha.
In 1884, the pagoda was fired and rebuilt right after.
Beside the Buddha which was built in bronze, gold and diamonds, Mahamuni has also a great value of sculptures with 6 bronze Khmer carving including Khmer warriors, lions and headed elephant.
