From March onwards is the right time to travel the islands and beaches along the South Central coast of Vietnam. While Nha Trang City is so popular with tourists, Diep Son in Van Phong Bay is an up-and-coming hub in Khanh Hoa Province. Just about 60km of road and a little more than an hour by ship separate Diep Son from Nha Trang. The undeveloped island of Diep Son is chosen by those who love exploring new lands. An interesting feature of the island is the underwater path known as “Diep Son thuy dao”.
Van Phong Bay in Khanh Hoa has three islets side by side connected by a winding path. The first path is 4.5m wide and around 700-800m long. The second one is the same width as the first, but only 500m long. The footpath is half submerged in the crystal clear water and only visible during low tide. The water level begins to fall at 6am and rises again at 12:00pm. Swim and have fun in the turquoise water and tread along this special footpath.
Travellers in these parts aren’t just struck by the singular uniqueness of the path. They are also impressed by the friendliness of the locals. Everyone from children to the elderly leads a simple life. There are no hotels on this island. You’d better bring enough food, personal items, tents, and other provisions to enjoy your relaxing moments here.
NOTE:
* It is about 60km from Nha Trang to Van Gia, Van Ninh.
Option I: Ask for the way to Van Gia Wharf. There, take ship to Diep Son between 9am and 11am, depending on the water level. The ship return to mainland at 5-6pm. The ship runs for 30 to 40 minutes.
Option 2: From Van Gia, drive 8km to Tan Dan. Ask for the Tan Dan communal temple. Opposite the temple is a small alley leading to the sea. Drive a couple of km, stop and shift to travel by boat in 15 minutes. The boat is quite small and can only serve 6 people maximum.
* Electricity on the island is available from 6pm to 9pm. If you use electricity, then you should pay for locals. There is a chicken farm and a few grocery shops so you can buy things but not much.
* You can travel by this itinerary: Nha Trang – Diep Son – Eastern Arctic – Hon Gam – Bai Na – Dam Mon – Dai Lanh Lighthouse.
